The National Overseas Scholarship is offered by India's Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment. Students from socially and economically backward classes can benefit from this scheme and study abroad at an accredited and recognised university.

Female students are eligible for 30% of all National Overseas Scholarships. The National Overseas Scholarship is available for Master's and Doctoral programs in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, and other countries. The system covers the cost of attendance, medical insurance, travel expenses, and other incidentals.

Students must earn scores on all relevant tests to study abroad at universities such as Boston University, Harvard University, the University of Iowa, and others.

National Overseas Scholarship Scheme

We have compiled some features of the National Overseas Scholarship below. You can take note of it and know whether you are eligible.

  • Students enrolled in Bachelor's degree programs are ineligible for the award.
  • Candidates who have already established or are studying in another country will not be considered for the scholarship.
  • This award is available to a maximum of two candidates from a single household.
  • Applicants should keep in mind that there will be no additional interviews or group discussions.
  • Admission to the chosen university is required in Germany, Canada, or the United States.

National Overseas Scholarship 2023

The National Overseas Scholarship has variable financial incentives. Notably, the funding varies depending on the requirements and country.

For studying in the USA and other countries except for the UK, the scholarship value is as follows.

  • The annual maintenance allowance of USD 15,400
  • Contingency allowance of USD 1,500
  • Tuition fees (actual as charged)
  • Visa fees (actual visa fees)
  • Medical Insurance Premium
  • Incidental Journey Allowance and Equipment Allowance
  • Poll Tax
  • Air passage

For studying in the UK, the scholarship value is as follows.

  • The annual maintenance allowance of GBP 9,900
  • Contingency allowance of GBP 1,100
  • Tuition fees (actual as charged)
  • Visa fees (actual visa fees)
  • Medical Insurance Premium
  • Incidental Journey Allowance and Equipment Allowance
  • Poll Tax
  • Air passage

In addition, students receive a genuine air passage allowance by economy class. Notably, 30% of these scholarships go to female applicants.

Also, the necessary financial help is supplied until the course/research is completed or until the following term, whichever comes first.

National Overseas Scholarship: Eligibility

As previously stated, the National Overseas Scholarship is transferable to universities in Canada, Germany, the United States, and other countries. In addition to meeting the entrance requirements of the chosen university, applicants must meet the eligibility criteria stated for the scholarship plan. SC, ST, and OBC candidates seeking the National Overseas Scholarship must meet the following requirements.

Educational background:

  • Master's Degree: Minimum 55% or equivalent at the Undergraduate level.
  • Doctorate Degree: Minimum of 55% or the equivalent at the Master's level is required.

Applicants should be aware that individuals with relevant experience will be given preference.

  • Maximum Age Requirement: Applicants must be under 35 on April 1, 2020.
  • Maximum Allowable Family Income: The total family income shall not exceed INR 6,00,000.
  • Children Criteria: The National Overseas Scholarship is only available to two children from the same parent.

Along with these prerequisites, applicants must meet the minimum score requirements of tests such as IELTS, PTE, GMAT, GRE, and others. Each university has its own ELP and other test score criteria.

National Overseas Scholarship: Documents Required

It is critical to plan ahead of time to avoid any last-minute problems during the application procedure. Students should prepare the necessary documentation in hard and soft copies.

Here is a list of all the documents required to apply for the National Overseas Scholarship.

  • Class 10 board exam certificate
  • Passport-size photograph
  • Caste certificate
  • Relevant degree
  • ITR acceptance
  • Employer's NOC (if applicable)
  • Address proof (current and permanent)
  • Signature Copy
  • Family Income documents
  • Proof of International university admission copy

Candidates must submit a copy of their passport, attestation, and other self-declaration forms after being selected. It is critical to visit the ministry during the application procedure.

National Overseas Scholarship: Application Process

The application form for the National Overseas Scholarship will be available on the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment's official website beginning in the first week of April. Students must submit the entire application and all relevant documentation by the deadline. All students must present self-attested copies of the following documents to the Ministry.

  • Proof of Date of Birth
  • All Degrees/ Diploma/ Certificate along with mark sheets
  • Family Income Certificate
  • Offer Letter College/ University

It is important to note that an offer of admission from the chosen university in Germany, Canada, or the United States is required.

National Overseas Scholarship: Selection Process

The National Overseas Scholarship Selection Committee analyses all applicants fairly. Candidates who meet the eligibility requirements are chosen for the scholarship award.

In addition, the National Overseas Scholarship Committee considers the following factors.

  • Applications received after the deadline will not be considered.
  • Those who have already been accepted to universities in the United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, and other countries will be given priority.
  • Students who have yet to be admitted to an overseas university will be assessed on a conditional basis.

If two or more applications are tied, students will follow the following procedure.

  • First, available unfilled female applicant seats will be awarded to the most qualified candidates.
  • The remaining slots will then be filled by eligible applicants over the age limit, with the oldest candidate receiving the first available slot and subsequent slots being filled in descending order.

What Are the Number of Slots Available for the Scholarship?

The number of slots available for the scholarship is subject to change every year. As such, students may supplement their allowances by working as Teaching/Research Assistants. The organisation will allocate 100 scholarship places to qualifying students for 2023.

Each year, 20 National Overseas Scholarship slots/awards are available, with six slots/awards available for girls.

How to Apply for National Overseas Scholarship?

If you fall under the eligibility criteria to apply for the National Overseas Scholarship, you can start applying early. The steps to be followed are given below.

  • Step 1: Click the "Apply Now" button.
  • Step 2: Click the "Register" button and fill in the required details to continue the process.
  • Step 3: The applicants who have already registered must log in using their valid credentials to begin the application process.
  • Step 4: Enter personal details, address, foreign university details, etc.
  • Step 5: Enter educational and employment details, visa details, etc.
  • Step 6: Upload the required documents and submit the form online.

As a result, students or working professionals who meet the eligibility conditions can pursue higher education using NOS funding. Notably, this funding can be critical in minimising the financial load for the duration of the abroad course.
