TOEFL Writing Section

The integrated writing section of TOEFL is aimed at testing the ability of the individual of how well can they understand and explain a passage and a lecture related to the same topic. It aims to make inferences, connect the two, and then present their opinions. 

In the integrated writing section, the test taker will have access to the passage for 20 minutes but can only listen to the lecture once. Generally, the topics are related to Social Sciences, Physical Science, or Humanities. 

Next, the author must then introduce what was said in the lecture. It would be good to start with a sentence like “according to the lecture…”. Next, the test taker should mention whether the lecture supports or is against the passage’s key ideas and explain the reason for this contradiction. 

Main Body

The test taker should then discuss the points mentioned in the lecture in the context of the points mentioned in the passage individually. As the main body progresses, the test taker must slowly build upon the original idea and describe in detail why the lecture contradicts the points mentioned in the passage.

‘If you wish, you can include a short conclusion, summarising the entire document clearly and concisely. 

For an ideal essay, the test taker must write over four paragraphs. One introduction and over three body paragraphs. If the test taker has the time or wishes to write more, they can include a short conclusion.  

Introduction

The foremost step is to establish the context of the essay. The test taker must introduce the topic, establish the relationship between the lecture and the passage, and describe the theme.  

Next, the author must then introduce what was said in the lecture. It would be good to start with a sentence like “As per the lecture…” or: according to the lecture…”. Next, the test taker should mention that the lecture supports the points mentioned in the passage. This will help establish a clear relationship between the two different bodies of literature.

The test taker should then discuss the points mentioned in the lecture in the context of the points mentioned in the passage individually. As the main body progresses, the test taker must slowly build upon the original idea and describe in detail why the lecture supports the points mentioned in the passage. You should properly do this while providing supporting examples from the lecture.

The second part of the TOEFL writing section tests how well the test taker can present their views and opinions and how clear their writing ability is. In this section, the test taker must follow a proper structure and present their views systematically and clearly. The most common way to write is to start with an introduction, two or three paragraphs of body, and then a conclusion. You can even begin or end with a quote should you wish to do so. 

A perfect TOEFL essay must have the right vocabulary or jargon and be free of all grammar errors. Avoid very short or long sentences. 

The essay must have a proper format, i.e., Introduction + 2xBody + Conclusion. 

The essay must use great transition words, and all the information must be linked and followed up correctly.

The essay must be straight to the point without giving irrelevant inferences and examples. 

The essay's tone must remain constant and according to the topic. 

Question - Explain which one you prefer - literature or the sciences.

Literature and science are both interrelated disciplines. One must have the other to progress. As a naturally curious person, I am inclined towards literature and the sciences.  

First, as mentioned above, science and literature can only make a little progress with the help and support of the other; for literature to exist, there must be ample scientific understanding and concepts to support it. For science, no fact or theory can exist without a plethora of research bodies and literature preceding it. You can see this clearly in any scientific journal or literary piece.  

Secondly, only man can make it anywhere in the world with the guidance of science and the support of literature. As a person deeply engrossed in the scientific world, I often find myself reading to take my mind off things when it gets too cramped up in the scientific world. 

Hence, when induced to choose between science and literature, I would rather take the hand of both than leave one standing alone. Both science and literature are crucial components of the human world, where one without the other cannot progress. 

 The TOEFL writing section measures your ability to present your thought articulately while keeping the main topic in mind. It is easy for someone with basic English knowledge to present their thoughts clearly and concisely. 

The topics in the writing section are very generalised. In this section, you might be asked to agree or disagree with a particular concept, elaborate on an existing idea, choose a particular side or preference, or be presented with an imaginary situation to write about.
